Jul 10th, 2010

Do you already run a company and want to expand it onto the web? Many people are now considering the career opportunities that can be had by doing business online. It could be that you just want to use the web as a marketing tool allowing you to reach many more customers. Even the main high street stores now have a presence online; just perform a search for such companies as Comet, Sainsbury’s or Marks and Spencer to see for yourself. Also there are some companies that have recently given up the high street and now just can be seen on the web such as Woolworths and Dixons.

If you do want to develop and have a new career online there some things you will need to think about. You will need to think about the location of your future customers, your internet shop front can be seen around the world but are you ready to cope with a global market, if not you will need to make this clear on your site. It is likely that you have already made a name for yourself in your current trading environment and have established a brand. Make sure to carry this over to your online venture, use your current sales slogans and logo’s. You will want to make sure that you employees have the technical knowhow to build and maintain a website, if not you will need to budget for this. If the site is fairly simple you may only need to pay a Web designer to construct the site, but if it is going to be complex needing perhaps a user or product database it would be worth employing your own web designer.

Another thing to keep in mind when doing business online is that things are likely to happen a good deal faster and your clients will expect a swift service. Also if you have any problems they will need to fixed quickly or things could soon get out of hand. There are some basic ways of expanding your existing business online by using some of the pre-existing solutions.

The most simple of these is to setup an eBay shop. There are lots of different types of eBay shop going from small one man operated distributers much larger ventures. A relatively new development on eBay is the eBay outlet, which is where a few of the major outlets like Argos and Debenhams are using eBay to sell online, if that’s not a recommendation for doing this I’m not sure what would be. In fact if you are stuck for career ideas looking through some of the diverse things that are selling on eBay could help. If you do not want to go down the eBay route then consider using a content management system like Joomla, or go to one of the many store builder sites like www.store2go.net. As you can see there are lots of diverse options to consider when thinking about creating yourself a new career online. Whichever you choose will be down to the kind of career opportunities you want to follow and what kind of product or service you want to sell.
