Your New Company And The Correct Cash Register Till

Dec 7th, 2009

Choosing which software to use for your new retail business is one of the biggest decisions you will make during the start-up process. People with little experience f this can get confused by all the options available. There is software to control inventory, software for accounting, software for employee management, and packages that promise to do it all.

An EPoS system or electronic point of sale is the most convenient system to use for retail. If your stock levels are high then you can use barcodes to count sales of individual items. This software is sold with cash registers that network with your computers, allowing for the ease of a cash register till with the sophistication of retail technology. Your business will run much more efficiently with an EPoS system even thought eh price of the investment may seem massive.

The following features are what you can use if you choose not to implement EPoS into your business.

Primarily you will need databases for stock control and spreadsheets for your accounts. If you use something like Excel to do your spreadsheets ion then it will be a huge drag on your time. And if you have not done spreadsheets before I would not leave it to starting up your business to learn.

So you should think about an all-in-one piece if software. There are already packages available that are aimed at the retail market. The more they do, the more expensive it can get. Be honest and think about how many customers will visit you on a weekly basis. If you sell large items, like Jacuzzis, and anticipate only a few sales per week, you will only need an accounting package for retail businesses that runs on one machine. You can use a cash register till to carry out the sale. You can take a recording of the sale on your computer after the sale.

If you keep a lot of stock and sell many items this type of machine will not do. You need the accounting package to record each sale as it is happening which a simple till will not do. However this still will not take credit card sales or track staff actions.
