Starting Your Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation tips are to be had from many places on the internet, but here are 3 easy to follow but extremely helpful tasks you can undertake to get seen in the search engines.

Keywords

Ask yourself, if I were going to look for the products and services I provide on my website what might I be looking for, what phrases would I be entering into the search engines? Ask your friends and family the same question and write down what they come out with.

Use these keywords on your site, in the title tags, the description, the body of the text on the page and in the links on your site to the other specific pages of your site.

Do not over use your keywords, just place them in the text as they would normally occur, using them to much will look messy.

At its simplest this is the foundations of Search Engine Optimisation Strategy and the most significant bits of on-page optimisation.

Title tags

When a web page is typed there is a place to add in a title tag for that page, many individuals just use one title for every page but this is not the way to do it.

Ensuring all page titles are, contains the keywords that are relevant to that page and show what the information on the page is.

Make the title fairly concise, below 65 characters including gaps, do not waste space with words such as welcome to our website.

Know your statistics

You can join up for statistics programs for nothing, such as analytics from Google, you may have a free statistics package available to you with the hosting business you use, or if you can afford it there are a number of programs that you can purchase and upload to your server.

Stats packages will let you see how many individuals have visited your site, where they went when they arrived there and possibly most importantly how they discovered you to begin with.

This can be used to great effect for example, if you discover that individuals are finding you using a term you have not optimised for then you can create a page for that phrase, using the phrase in the title and the other places that are good for search engine optimisation, potentially this will rank well in the search engines for that phrase and you should discover more individuals finding you for that term.

This has been a quick over view of how search engine optimisation can be used on your website to good effect, you may want to think about using the skills of a Search Engine Optimiser to help with your search engine optimisation work.
