Several Basic Principles Regarding Postcard Printing

Jul 19th, 2010

If you are advertising your business, making announcements for an upcoming event, or keeping in touch, you can use postcards. They are a great solution for your communication needs. They can be printed at a lower cost than brochures and flyers and mailing them costs less too! If you are looking for a new means of communication, here are some reasons to look at postcard printing.

Before you begin, there are two major decisions that must be made. You need to know if the postcards will be sent through the mail and what size you want to use. Once you have made these decisions, you can start creating your postcards.

There are specific dimensions required by the United States Postal Service for postcards. These are the dimensions which can be considered postcards: the length should be a minimum of five inches but not exceed six inches, and the height should be three and a half inches but not exceed four and one quarter inches. The minimum dimensions must be met, otherwise the item cannot be sent through the mail. If the postcard exceeds the maximum dimensions, it must have the postage for a first class stamp.

Remember, if you plan to mail your postcards, they must have a space for an address and stamp. This space must be located on the right hand side of the postcard. Make sure the space in the upper right hand corner is clear for a stamp and there is sufficient space for the address.

You can always send your postcards within an envelope, but make sure you can find an envelope to fit the size you have chosen. You do not want to design your postcards only to realize they cannot be mailed.

Now that you have made these decisions, you can start designing your postcard. Whether using them for business or pleasure, keep it simple. You have a lot of options within the design. You can opt to use many colors, a few colors, or just black and white. You also need to decide whether you will use plain or glossy paper. Make sure your selection is heavy weight, like card stock. These extra options, like full color and specialty papers, should all be factored into the overall price of the card. Using specialty paper and multiple colors is the most expensive option.

Do not forget the basics. Make sure the people who receive the postcard have all the information they need. If you use them to advertise a business, make sure to describe what you do. Think about giving away an item if someone brings the postcard to your business, or offer a discount for first time visitors. These are principles you can apply for your events too. Do not forget to give the time, date, and location.

Postcards are designed to grab attention. Do not forget to give your contact details: your telephone number, email address, and website so the person who receives your postcard can contact you. As you now know, postcard printing can be done by yourself. Check to see if your word processing program has templates for presentation folders and if your printer is able to print on specialty paper. If you cannot do it yourself, a local printer will be able to assist you with your printing needs.
